Relative to other jurisdictions, competition experts in Japan are a rarity. "There's still no more than 20 experts in Japanese competition law," one lawyer tells GCR. But that figure applies only to Japan's star competition lawyers - the leading bengoshi in each firm. Younger lawyers are rising through the ranks, viewing competition as a viable career path. International firms are also boosting their antitrust presence in Japan, hiring local specialists and offering the benefits of a global network that most Japanese firms lack.
