Hungary's Competition Authority

Hungary's parliament adopted proposed amendments to the country's competition laws last June, only for the president to refer the bill to the constitutional court over a proposed two-year ban from managerial positions for executives implicated in cartels. The challenge was upheld this year, saying that defendants' right to a fair trial would be compromised. The entire bill has now been put on ice and will now have to be resubmitted to parliament. If the bill is eventually passed, the authority will gain significantly enhanced cartel-busting powers and an improved leniency policy. It will also boost claimants' rights to obtain damages from cartelists.
