South Africa's Competition Commission

Monday, 1 June 2009

South Africa's Competition Commission continued to go from strength to strength in 2008. Local practitioners speak highly of the authority, considering it one of the most effective government bodies in the country. The authority has used its powers to help reduce the divide between the poor and the wealthy in South Africa, deliberately targeting sectors that affect the most vulnerable members of society. In 2008, it continued its aggressive enforcement campaign, cracking down on collusion in the market for basic foodstuffs such as bread and milk, which hurt the country's poorest consumers.
