Cape Town’s High Court today denied class certification in two lawsuits stemming from South Africa’s Competition Commission’s cartel investigation of the bread industry.

Several South African consumer groups and bread distributors have filed two class action lawsuits against three bread companies, claiming damages for price fixing. The lawsuits follow the Competition Commission’s four-year investigation of the sector.

South Africa’s Competition Tribunal has fined Pioneer Foods 196 million rand (US$26 million) for its role in a cartel that fixed the price of bread. It is the highest fine – as a percentage of turnover – imposed in South Africa to date.
