Biography: Competition

John Davies is a UK lawyer and a partner in Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer LLP. He is the co-head of the firm's antitrust, competition and trade group and he divides his time between the Brussels and London offices. He served as managing partner of the firm's Brussels office for over 10 years, having founded the office in 1989. Before joining the firm, John worked as a case officer in the European Commission's Directorate-General for Competition. John's practice focuses on competition and regulatory matters at both European and national levels, including the coordination of cases before several different competition authorities in major international transactions and investigations.

His recent experience includes representing Solvay on the EU and international merger control aspects of its acquisition of Rhodia; Comcast in the EU and international merger control aspects of its acquisition of majority control of NBC Universal from GE; Bank of America Merrill Lynch in the Commission's investigation into anti-competitive behaviour in the credit default swap markets; Sony Pictures Entertainment in relation to the EC's inquiry into the roll-out of digital cinema around Europe; and Total, Zurich Financial Services and Wyeth in sectoral inquiries by the European Commission. His other regular clients include AB InBev, Carlson, Mitsui and BP.

John is a visiting Senior Fellow at King's College, University of London and is a non-governmental adviser to the International Competition Network (ICN). He is recognised as a leading competition law practitioner in the principal legal directories and a number of guides. John speaks English and French.
