Biography: Competition
Dr Martin Klusmann is a partner at Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer LLP. He is co-head of the firm's antitrust, competition and trade (ACT) group. He has been a Rechtsanwalt since 1992 and is also admitted to the Brussels bar. He became partner in 1997. Martin specialises in German, European and international competition and antitrust law, with a special focus on mergers and cartel work.He has been involved in leading roles in the following major investigations: steel beams; alloy surcharge and alloy surcharge re-adoption; large diameter and seamless tubes; methionine; vitamins; Austrian banks; foreign exchange fees; cement and ready-mix concrete; graphite electrodes; specialty graphite; electrical and mechanical contacts; sodium gluconate; plasterboard; industrial insurance; sorbates; organic peroxides; international roaming; MCAA; marine hose; bananas; rubber chemicals; and elevators. Martin has led many internal audits and investigations in these and other cases and has represented clients before the competent competition authorities and national and European courts as well as arbitration tribunals. He has particular expertise in the IT, chemicals and heavy industries sectors. Recent clients include ThyssenKrupp, Vodafone, SGL Carbon, Hoechst, Chiquita, Continental and Knauf.
Martin studied law at the universities of Hamburg and Bochum, and holds a doctor of law degree (Dr jur) from the University of Bochum. In 1995, he was a visiting attorney at Kirkland & Ellis in Chicago. He is a co-author of Wiedemann, Handbuch des Kartellrechts. Martin speaks German, English and some Dutch.
