Biography: Competition
Martina Maier is head of the European antitrust and competition practice group of McDermott Will & Emery. She is based in the Brussels office. Her practice focuses on German and European competition law, including single firm conduct, merger control, agreements restricting competition and state aid. She has extensive experience in representing private and public clients in a broad range of industries before the European Commission and national competition authorities and courts.She is vice president of the Competition Law Commission of the Union Internationale des Avocats and co-head of the Brussels representation of the Association of German Speaking Competition Lawyers (Studienvereinigung Kartellrecht).
Martina has written and spoken widely on competition law matters. Recent speaking engagements include "The Tension between Regulatory and Competition Law", Oxford University (February 2012); "Services of General Economic Interest in Germany", Conseil d'Etat, Paris (October 2011); and "State Aid Law as a Means for Market Regulation - Experiences from the Financial and Economic Crisis", Annual UIA Conference, Istanbul (November 2010). Recent publications include "Passing-On defence in German Follow-on Damage Claims", Der Betrieb (January 2012), chapter on merger control in a book on restructuring of companies, Beck 2011, and "European Commission Dawn Raids into Alleged Infringing Conduct: The Treatment of Electronic Documents", Proceeding of the ABA SIL Spring Meeting (April 2009).
German is her mother tongue and she is fluent in English and French.
