Javier Ruiz Calzado

Javier Ruiz Calzado is a partner in Latham & Watkins' Brussels office and Co-Chair of the Global Antitrust and Competition Practice Group. He practices EU and Spanish competition law, focusing on cartel defense and merger control work in a variety of sectors, in particular in electricity and gas. Mr. Ruiz Calzado advises on a regular basis a major international energy group on general antitrust and EU regulatory issues.

Prior to joining Latham & Watkins, Mr. Ruiz Calzado served as référendaire (clerk) to Judge García-Valdecasas at the Court of First Instance of the European Communities (CFI), now renamed as General Court of the European Union. He was actively involved in a number of landmark CFI judgments in leading competition cases, such as Airtours/First Choice and Bayer-Adalat.

Mr. Ruiz Calzado's experience covers a large variety of matters raising all kind of EU and competition law and policy issues, both before the European Commission and before the European Courts in Luxembourg. He regularly advises companies in relation to international cartels investigations by the European Commission.

His Spanish practice includes representing companies in merger filings before the National Antitrust Authorities and advising clients involved in national antitrust investigations.
