Caroline Coops is a partner in the competition law and regulatory group. Her practice focuses on contested merger clearances, abuse of dominance, consumer protection and restrictive trade practices matters.

Caroline has particular experience advising clients on the competition law aspects of mergers and acquisitions, as well as advising on potential competitive effects of commercial arrangements (eg, joint venture proposals, distribution and supply contracts, market offerings and pricing structures). Her recent experience includes acting for GE Mining in its acquisition of Industrea Limited, acting for six major financial institutions in obtaining ACCC clearance of their joint venture arrangements with Experian with respect to credit reporting services and acting for AXA Asia Pacific Holdings (AXA APH) in relation to AMP’s acquisition of AXA APH’s Australian and New Zealand businesses.

Caroline represents clients from a wide array of industries including banking, telecommunications, petroleum and retail. These clients rely on her extensive experience with the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC), including her understanding of their priorities and approach, and track record in devising innovative solutions in complex merger control cases.

Caroline has been recognised as a leading competition practitioner by Chambers Asia Pacific (2012) and the International Financial Law Review’s Expert Guide to Competition and Antitrust Lawyers and Economists (2012), and as one of Australia’s top competition lawyers, as judged by peers, in the Australian Financial Review in 2011 and 2012. Caroline was also shortlisted for the Euromoney Legal Media Group – Asia Women in Business Law Awards in 2011 and 2012.
