GCR's Competition Law, Consumer Goods and Retail

The focus of competition regulators on the supply chain and retailing of fast moving consumer goods continues to sharpen. Recent enforcement activity at EU and national level shows no sign of this abating with the German and Netherlands competition authorities both reporting investigations in the past week.

The European Commission in its recent report on competition issues in the food supply chain encouraged competition authorities to maintain vigorous and coherent enforcement in this sector.

This one day conference will focus on these issues with senior regulators, lawyers, economists and company representatives offering practical advice and expert comment on:

Overview of EU and national policy announcements

Enforcement activity and likely trends

Information flows - the dangers: supplier/retailer contacts; 'hub and spoke' cartels; information exchange; collaboration to achieve environmental and other policy objectives; trade associations

The customer/competitor relationship - resale price maintenance; category management, pricing (rebates, over-riders, stocking allowances, delisting)

Buyer power - nature and sources; buyer alliances; approaches of regulators

Consolidation: FMCG and retail mergers

Online distribution and sales restrictions

This conference is the first CLA regional meeting and follows a decision taken by the Council in 2008 to organise an event to focus on a specific region in the year in which no Commonwealth Law Conference is due to take place. The theme of the conference is ‘The 21st Century Lawyer: Present Challenges & Future Skills’ and the two programme streams will focus on ‘Human Rights & the Rule of Law’ and ‘Corporate & Commercial Law’ with an emphasis on issues of importance within the host country and wider region. The sessions will offer practical training which will provide and further develop the legal skills of those attending, in addition to providing the usual networking opportunities and exciting social programme.

ABA's Section of International Law - 2010 Spring Meeting

The biennial Spring Meeting in New York has emerged as one of the world's most important gatherings of international lawyers. Our 2008 meeting in New York attracted almost 1400 attendees from 49 countries.

This year's offering promises to be even bigger, with over 70 programs. We'll be kicking things off on Tuesday, April 13th, with a full slate of programming, including a day-long series of "Fundamentals" programs on the nuts and bolts of handling cross-border matters. Those sessions are organized in cooperation with the International Section of the New York State Bar Association and will qualify for "bridge the gap" CLE credit. The day's programming will be capped by our ever-popular "speed networking" event (you're guaranteed to walk away with new friends and a fist full of business cards) and the opening reception at the Grand Hyatt.
